Making a Boss Part 1
Well, It's been a bit of time. I've been working on two enemies which will act as the game's first boss - The Helping Hand, and the Warning Sign
The Helping Hand is a basic attacker, I designed the enemy after fireworks incidents, and wanted to make the exposed bones and flapping fingers appear like teeth and mouths. In the ecosystem of Siphonogore, these are the pieces of a creature that are designed to kill.In game these freaky floaters deal damage of one type to a single target, they have a "hit what I can" type of behavior.
The Warning Sign is a debuffer coupled with a high-risk, high-damage attacker, I designed it off of UK Smoking Packet warnings, Lung cancer, Trypophobia, scarecrows, and themes of infestation. In the ecosystem of Siphonogore, this would be part of the creature that eats and focuses on staying alive.
In the game, it follows a debuff > Mutate (preparing an attack) > attack behavior pattern, giving the player a chance to attack and interrupt the boss before it deals a devastating multi-target attack.
When The Warning Sign Mutates to attack, it lodges its still-intact lung into its throat, allowing it to eject it with force in the next turn.
This gives the player a chance to attack and knock the enemy out of its "Mutated" state, a kind of pull towards choosing a priority - try to avoid damage or another large effect, or do what you were trying to set up or do initially.
To facilitate this I reworked the Status Effect system - it's much more robust now, you can change a bunch of different stats with buffs or debuffs under a single umbrella effect and moves can apply effects to the target and the character itself at the same time, it's capable of doing a lot more, I hope I can show that off in full next time.
I need to complete the art for the Helping Hand and Warning Sign's attacks next, and make sure the interruption mechanic works properly. hopefully that won't take too long.
